I just came across this new item/service that the crazy folks at Google are offering to web-savvy businesses out there. They call it the Google Mini Search Appliance. You get a piece of hardware and all the software necessary to use the power of Google within your business intranet or on your website. really impressive, it would work well for large companies with millions of documents.

It's been out for at least 2 years... I have consulted for a few companies that have used it. The ability to integrate and customize is pretty impressive.

The reason it caught my eye is because I use Google Desktop quite regularly, but people often shun it as a business application because they are concerned about informational privacy. For a large organization, this product would open up the power of a great business tool (Desktop) across the entire organization. Having a sweet link from Google and also choosing how Google indexes you would be quite handy.

It's a nice concept for a large business. Specially for a large programming firm (i.e. EA, Microsoft etc).

I think for most of us out there.. just not enough people to warrant it. I mean my firm we use a few servers.. but I can find almost any file within 5 minutes through my searching
