Default How does google view .info, .org, and .name extensions

I'm looking to build a new site and would like to choose a domain name "city real estate". The .com and .ca extensions are gone but I can still get other extensions. Does it make a difference for SEO purposes what extension you choose. Also does it help with SEO if "city real estate" is the main search term and that term is your domain name.

On another point - I've only posted here a few times. I just tried to create links in my signature but wasn't able to do so. Is that due to a glitch in the system, something I'm doing wrong, or do I have to post a certain # of times before I can get the live link.

Larry -

The extensions don't make a bit of difference. There is a slight SEO advantage for using "city real estate" as the domain name, but it's not huge. Choose your domain name with branding in mind - it's much more important.

I'd certainly agree with that. Branding is worth more than SEO when it comes to domain names...unless you are buying a site that is already established...but then the cost for that is a bit different as well :-).

dot com has the advantage in branding primarily because of name recognition, but some of the others can have solid results as well.

Hope that helps.

Best;

Eric

Thanks that does help. I'll give the domain name a bit more thought in terms of branding.

Along similar lines when looking at valueing a sites intellectual property if ever it was to be sold would you say a .com would be worth more than the others mentioned?

IMO, all other aspects being equal, a .com will be worth more than any other extension b/c of the branding aspects of a .com (most people assume websites are .com's) However, there are many other aspects that are infinitely more important when evaluating the worth of a domain - its backlinks, SERP positioning, traffic, & branding.

If you only plan on the website being found by the search engines then the extension does not matter. If you plan to advertise the site and expect people to type the url in the address bar then stick with a .com. People are creatures of habit and the norm is .com. You don't want to send people to your competitor.
