Default Pinging

I thought I would stimulate some dialogue on pinging. I do not have a clear understanding of the value of pinging and/or if it is necessary. So, is pinging necessary, and can pinging be set up for website, or is pinging not necessary for a website? Won't Google's spiders do the job?

Any thoughts?

You can set up your google sitemap with pinging (which should have the same effect of pinging your site).

Is this an option accomplished through Google Webmaster Central?

You create the google sitemap and then submit it to webmaster central, yes.

Well, the sitemap is done and gets regularly submitted, however, what about the pinging aspect? Does a Google sitemap automatically ping Google on updates, or does the Google sitemap have to be manually submitted to ping Google?

Depends on what you are using to build/update the sitemap. Some scripts will do it for you automatically when the file is rebuilt. If you're doing it manually, you would have to ping Google (or wait for them to spider you again). If you update your site enough, you can probably get away without pinging as you would be regularly spidered.
