I just read an interesting article on factoring affecting web ranking. One of the factors that was put forth was the number of hits a page received in the organic listing.
What do you think? Is there a way to test this?

Last time I talked on this subject I was firmly put in my place but I think it has some minimal effect. IMVHNIO

Disclaimer: This is just my opinion, and I can't recall a specific article that I can link to, to back this opinion up.
Logically speaking, it seems like Google would measure and rank you based at least partly on click thru and bounce rates. I mean-- Google wants to be the best search engine out there, right? That's their goal. They want their product (their algorithm, their SERPs) to give the best results at the top of their SERPs. They want to give the user what the user is looking for. They must measure click thru, to see if it's true. Seems like Google must measure a few things: a) Types of results clicked, to determine if the keyword phrase is likely to be a navigational vs informational, so that they can alter the results. b) click thru (in an extreme example: if no one clicks on result #2, result 2 must not be what the users are looking for, when they put in that particular keyword phrase) c) bounce rate (if everyone clicks on the result #2 but then immediately clicks back, this result must not be what people are looking for) I've noticed that over time our position drops for keywords for which I have high placement but really low click thru.

I suspect the same. Google will not either confirm or deny if this is a factor. So at this point all we have is opinions. Now if someone from Google is reading this and would like to share the algorithm, please send it over in a PM. I promise to only use it for good.

I would think that Google would view click thru rates as a relevant ranking criteria as long as the visitor remained on the site for at least a little while. Not just click on then jump back off immediately.

You would think that they'd use all of that user behavior data in some respect...
Might be why they have a patent on it: http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-...RS=20050071741

Hits will never effect the PR but..
if a website ranked #5 for a specific keyword is getting more clicks than a website ranked #1, then that's definitely tells google that they are doing something wrong and that their results are not accurate, and after a while website #5 will outrank website #1.. for more informations about this read this interesting article and experiment: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/proof-goo...ta-in-rankings cheers. Not only do they have a patent for measuring the click through rate but they have spyware on millions of computers to track what people are doing on the web. You probably have it on your computer. When I click submit, the big g will get a copy of this post. That is why i call them the big g.

I wish there had been a forth option on this poll: Google collects the information about hits but is not likely to use it in the organic SERPs.....that is what i really wanted to pick. If clicks were counted it would be far to easy to manipulate the organic SERPs for yourself and competitors. But we all know Google does collect the information...Google collects all information it can get its hands on...that is one of their goals, to collect all the knowledge possible and organize it.....
