Question Real estate chain

Hello everybody,

My name is Kristijan and I am a student. I have just recently been introduced to the RE industry through one of my courses in school and I am still kind of lost, plus I have to prepare a paper on the subject.
I was wondering if somebody could explain me how the whole process works from a business point of view and not from a client's. I am especially interested in what are the steps in the process and the roles of institutions in the RE industry (RE broker, mortgage broker, warehouse , table funded loans , investment bank, FannieMae, FreddieMac... - I probably left a few steps out) and how much money does each step make and based on what (which ones are the most/least profitable and why)? Another question that I have... Can a RE broker also be a mortgage broker or does it need to be separate, or can a RE broker be also an investment bank, if it has enough assets. The queston is really about merging different steps of businesses into one - can that be done, and why?

I know these questions seem odd to all of you in the RE business, but I am trying to come up with as much data and information as possible for the paper.

Thank you all for your help,

Regards,

Kristijan
