Default Need help with Word

Every once in a while when I go to save a Word doc, it won't save, telling me the file is read only. This has happened even after reinstalling Word. I can save as and renamc the docs when this happens so it isn't exactly tragic, but it is inconvenient. Any ideas as to why this happens?

Are these docs you've created or something someone emailed to you? It often happens if you did not create the doc, and yes you have to save it as a new name. Annoying I know. I am seeing it more in Word 2003 as my office just made the switch from Office 2000.

Lots of reasons why this happens (it's microsoft after all):
  • Rights - The folder you are trying to save to is owned by another user and you do not have administrator rights.
  • Type - The document type you are trying to save is not the same version as the version of windows you are using. This is quite common in newer versions of word. If you open a doc from an older version and go to save it, you are prompted that it's a different version. You try and save and it says "The file your are attempting to over write is Read Only. Rename the file or save the file in another directory."
  • Saving to a network drive - As said above, if you are on a network, you may not have write rights to that folder or file. You can open it, but if you try and save it (without being an administrator) you can't. That's why renaming works.
  • Corruption - The original file may be corrupted.
Am I getting warm yet?
