Default A topic I don't see very much... Coaching

Does anyone have any experience with business coaches (I'm not talking about the Robbins type ... makes you walk on hot coals after the session)?

I know on other forums, this is a pretty good topic with replies ranging from "wasted money" to "best thing I ever did".

Anyone have any comments? Anyone try one or currently using one?

I was in Mike Ferry One-on-One coaching for while towards the beginning of my career. It was instrumental in establishing the foundation for my real estate career.

The bottom line with any coaching or training is that you get out of it exactly what you put in to it. Period. Nobody can instill in you the desire to get up and do the things everyday that make you successful - that comes from within.

Ah, they contact me quite a bit for their classes.

I downloaded some of the their free scripts once, and haven't heard the end of them yet.

Yes, I agree... What you get out is what you put in and supposedly some of them have systems that if you follow them you should experience an increase in business.

On one hand, I wonder about the validity of many of the claims and on the other do they actually suggest unique, not tried before techniques that have proven results.

It seems to me that most of what they offer is common sense as it applies to business, strategies that are well known and goal orientation.

Thanks for the response

I was chatting with a coach not too long ago who wanted almost $1200 a month and a 12 month minimum commitment.

Even if every word he said was gold that's a lot of money to be putting out.

I admit at times I'm winging it, but I get enough free advice from experienced co-workers and the people here that I'm not going to spend $15,000 to chat with someone on the phone for a few hours each week.

Also the coach who supposedly did millions of dollars in sales was not an internet guru. I've done about 10 million in sales this year just winging it and I expect to do a good deal more next year. What can he teach me about better search engine optimization?

How does the relationship work. I konw their are classes. But if you have a one on one coach. Do they help organize your business. I guess I would be interested if someone provided experienced help for organizational purposes. I worried though it will be someone with a pep talk. Can anyone recommend a good coach they have used in the past?

Also what do people think about large classes vs personal coaches.

the only people making money at those things are the ones selling the coaching.

A book can do the same for $20.00 I know if I was a coach I would write a book and be done with it.. But then again it would be nice getting $1000 per person and because people will pay why not.

But for me I will take up my local library.

Good questions

There are quite a few different types, ways and relationships.

I've spoken with quite a few recently, and choosing one is no easy chore.

It really depends on what you need. For example, there are some that specialize in business organization, business efficiency and there are some specific to a given industry.

Some have been in the industries they coach for, for many years, and it's their experience and guidance that you draw on. The main goal of having a coach is for those in business for themselves to have some one to report to and be accountable to. The coaches give out tasks based on your needs and it is your responsibility to fulfill the task before the next session.

Prices also vary. Coastals for example is probably the most expensive I've ever heard of aside from the life coaches (walk on coals as an example).

However there are many more that are less expensive.

Some teach in a class room environment and others give one on one phone or internet sessions.

I believe if you find the right one for your purposes they can have a very good impact on your business.

I disagree however, that you can learn what they know and have to offer from a book. I've been in my business for over 25 years and what I know and teach my employees can not be found or learned from any book.

In actuality, coaches with companies are not the ones raking in the big bucks. They make a good salary like any consultant, but by no means are they retaining the bulk of the funds. It's the company that employs them that makes the bulk of income from coaching. Think of coaches as a private school teacher, same thing.

I've spoken with a few people lately who have used different coaches for various reasons and out of the 3 all have agreed their business has increased in someway. Not all agree that there was financial increase, but instead had better organizational skills or were conducting business more efficiently.

I'm coached w/ my business partner for around $600/month through Buffini & co. It turns into couples counseling a lot, but the advice is sound. There is a specific, proven action plan that our coach is pointing us towards...which is a good thing. I don't know if I think it's worth $600/month, but it's definitely valuable. My only beef with their philosophy is that it doesn't cover a lot of real world issues - it's more of a philosophy...when we get down to "what should our split be?" & "how much should we spend on marketing?" we get criptic answers.

The best coaching I get is through correspondences with the friends/colleagues I know from this board...just wanted to add that. Free exchange of ideas is a pretty powerful thing.
