What is the benefit of the site map that one has as a snippet and that one has installed through the back end?

I now have the snippet site map on my site and have done the google webmaster tools addition as well.

If I recall something was said about .xml.

What is it and why would I want it and do you have to install it on my site?

If so what is involved for time?
