Seems Like it might be adding no ratings as a "0" or some other way adding it.
I know I'm not a great blogger, but a "2" Shouldn't it only count posts that have been rated?

I'm not sure the ratings model is a good idea. I know that I have had posts worthy of a 10, and received squat, while others have received a 10 that are worth 0! Ratings are something that are easy to manipulate. For instance, "I'll rate yours if you rate mine" etc.

I agree. I imagine that a lot of the top ratings come from people puffing their own posts. It wouldn’t bother me to see the ratings eliminated.

I guess I should have attempted to puff my own posts before making that comment
I suppose that a weighted rating system would make sense. I am not against rating systems. I am more indifferent.

I think Ryan is pointing out something I also noticed (I think.) If a blog post has not been rated, it's giving it a 0 and is weighted into your total average which shows up in your user stats widget. (On the right hand side of your blog if you have this widget added on.) Problem with this:
Non members can't post a rating and our true audience (potential clients) are not going to become members just so they can rate a post. Ultimately, our blogs should be intended for our targeted audience in our area and you should know the demographics of your locality and what's important to them. (I need to remember that for myself! )So, generally if you write up a blog that members are interested in such as search engine marketing tips, Association rules, etc.. those are really the only posts that are getting ratings right now. The posts that are intended for our readers in our area (non-members) are not going to get rated because they can't rate them. So, Ryan has a 2 and I have a 1 in the current rating system. I don't feel bad because Jennifer Mackay and Mark Wallington have ratings of 1 and 0 EVEN though those are great blogs targeting their specific audience -- potential clients for Panama City and Dubai real estate. (I'm sure there are several others but I notice their blogs because both real estate markets interest me.)The readers I Really want (potential clients that fit the demographics of the areas I specialize in) don't know the rating system and more then likely are not going to become members so they can rate my posts. (And allowing Non-members to rate and comment on posts certainly opens up a rotten can of worms because I think we all know what happens when allowing anonymous usage.) With the current system, it should state "Peer Rating" (or something along those lines) and only take into account posts that have been rated by other members and not all of those 0 rating posts. Just my thoughts.

Oh, and if you are wondering why I don't comment or rate their posts that I do read, it's because I don't want to spam/hijack a blog targeted to potential clients and If I rate them, then it looks like I'm just rating particular members.
I have clients that have bought/sold or have some interest in the real estate in these areas so I tend to try to stay on top of what is going on in these areas.

I think the rating system in a good idea, as webmaster stated-implemented properly it will be a good tool. Perhaps it would be possible for only registered members to "see" the rating?? (Is that how it works already??) I think more users should comment on blogs they read. It's a fact that many people DO read our blogs, but it is nice to receive feedback. I try to comment on blogs that capture (and keep) my attention. Just my thoughts.

It certainly should not be applying a rating of zero for non rated posts - I will fix that so that it is not yet rated, and is not calculated into a users ratings.
Give me some time to digest your comments regarding ratings if you would - Certainly some great feedback
