Default Any Penalty or Benefit To Duplicate Content On Your Site?

Will google penalize you if you have duplicate content on different pages of your site? For example, if you have a page on Royal Oak Condos and you have a bunch of different communities and information on each community on your Royal Oak Condo page, and then you took each community and made a separate page for each community, would google or any search engine have a problem with that? I just figured why not have the information on multiple pages for the viewer in case they land on one page and not the other they would still get the info. Any thoughts?

Dupe content leads to supplemental results.

I quoted the text below from here (hope that's ok):
http://www.seobook.com/archives/001545.shtml
What are supplemental results?

Supplemental results usually only show up in the search index after the normal results. They are a way for Google to extend their search database while also preventing questionable pages from getting massive exposure.

How does a page go supplemental?

From my experiences pages have typically went supplemental when they became isolated doorway type pages (lost their inbound link popularity) or if they are deemed to be duplicate content. For example, if Google indexes the www. version of your site and the non www. version of your site then likely most of one of those will be in supplemental results.

hope this helps. I'm sure someone more experienced than me will chime in as well...

An important phrase here mark is "significantly duplicate" If a page has "significantly duplicate" content (Same Titles, same meta data, and for the most part, the exact same content on the page) then Google is likely going to attempt to consolidate these pages into one page, so that they do not serve more than one of the same thing from the same domain. (So it is advisable, to have "signifant unique textual content" on every page)

Now - if your question is - assuming I write a unique page, with some amazing content not found on any other pages, but I also want to include some very helpful information in a textual format that also happens to exist on another page(s) of my site, is that ok? Absolutely! Google is trying to abolish cookie cutter content, not common sense

I just watched a good video from Stompernet that explains how to tell if it's duplicate content or not by counting the words on your site. It shows you how to do it. Very interesting.

yes. google penalised you if you have duplicate content. But i don`t know which is "better" , have duplicate content but quality content or having not duplicate content but bad quality content?

Even if you duplicate every word on the page and in the code there is no penalty. Only one page will show up in the serps and one page will not show up. I don't know where it goes because supposedly there is no supplemental index anymore.

What you want to do sound ok. Write for the user and not for the search engines.

I don't think there is a penalty. If there was, having my contact information in the same place on every page would have killed me by now.

Duplicate content has nothing to do with supplemental results. It's split PageRank from links pointing to two versions of a page instead of having all the link juice consolidated into one URL that causes some pages to not have enough PageRank be indexed or if indexed, be included in the main index.

If you want to know more about duplicate content, this is the only link you really need to read:

Early on in my website days, I thought the fact that I used a template for the main header and navigation bars as well as the footer was gonna get me in trouble for dup content . From my experience, as others have stated, long as the bulk of the information is unique there should be no problems at all.
