For SEO you do want to have as many good-quality links into your website as possible. Ideally those links should come from sites that are in the same arena as yours. For example, real estate to real estate. This is why writing articles or press releases are great for SEO as they are distributed widely, often to high PR (page rank) sites.

If you've not already used it, I'd recommend Web CEO as a great tool for running your SEO programs (and learning a lot about SEO). The basic version is free to download and use.

Link exchange is good but what matter is the relevancy of your link.

Make your sites functionality good and your site to be interesting and eventually you will get a link from other site.

Link farms should have a negative impact on your ranking.
