Default seeking smartphone advice

I'm considering buying a smartphone for various reasons, but mostly so I can respond quickly to emails as opposed to whenever I happen to be in front of a computer.

Right now I have Alltel wireless service. I am happy with their service and will likely stick with them.

They have 5 different phones available that might fit the bill:
  • Moto Q
  • Blackberry 8703 or 8130 (pearl)
  • Palm Treo 755p or 700wx

I'm leaning toward the Treo because it could act as a modem for my laptop, which would be handy.

I'm wondering if anyone has had good or bad experiences with any of these devices. Which did you choose and why?

I have a Palm treo 700p and all i can say is not ready for primetime.

Blackberry or Iphone are the ways to go in my book.

I have mostly heard good things about Blackberry. I would go with that.

I have owned the Treo 600p & 650p and my business partner just got rid of his 700w. I would definitely go with the P over the W, but recommend neither. My partner just got rid of his 700w because he hated it. The earlier 600 and 650 gave me a lot of trouble too.

Currently, I have a Verizon 6700 and I have been pretty happy with it. It is windows bases, so sometimes it runs a little slow. I love the huge screen and full slide out keypad.

I would not suggest going with an iPhone, unless you dislike carrying more than one thing. This was my primary reason for getting an iPhone, but it is hardly a smartphone, more a multimedia device.

I had a blackberry pearl before the iPhone, and iPhone is not match for it as a "smartphone"

I just switched from a blackberry to the treo 755p. I think it is great and has several advantages over the blackberry. First, I loved the blackberry for email, once it is set up I didn't have to think about it, but it felt like that the web browser portion was subpar. The email works just fine with the treo and I feel the web browser is much more useful. I can also use the phone as my lockbox key and easily access listings out in the field. The ekey (supra system) does not currently work with blackberry. So I guess it depends what you want your phone to do.

Anytime you buy a smartphone get the insurance! It's only about $7/mo. I've had 4 Blackberry phones paying between $300-400 each to the T-Mobile Nazis. They all broke and I never had insurance. I had software issues, speaker issues, microphone issues, etc.
I believe there are a couple Blackberry models that don't offer insurance, like the Curve, so make sure before you buy.

Now I have a Treo b/c it's one of the only phones with the ekey feature that let's you open iboxes. I started off a couple years ago with the 650 (with insurance), it broke. Sprint mailed me a 655 refurb, it broke. Then I received a 700 refurb, it broke. Finally they mailed me a 755p w/o the bulky antenna, which is nice. It appears to be a new phone. Hopefully they got tired of paying the postage. From my experience, the refurbished crap always craps out. I guess that's why they don't reuse parts from crashed airplanes.

I like both Blackberry and Treo Smartphones. The Phone Gods just don't like me for some reason. Most people I know never have problems. With the full keyboards, both phones are great for text and email and both also have easy sync functions with your CMS program.

The iphone: that's just way too cool for me at this point!

Go with the Treo 755p (stay away from the Windows OS version).

I have a treo & I can't hear people even at full volume. The web browser is very slow. If I was to buy a new phone today I would try the blackberry or i-phone.
