Do these small message boards help with seo?
I've seen them on the side bars of web pages, they usually are for shout out type stuff. But I figure it could be an interaction tool between prospects and myself. They can ask a quick question, I can answer it with out being such a "formal" message board.

properly moderated user contributed content is a good thing IF it is directed in a way that it also improves the overall presentation / usefulness of your site - banter by itself detracts from your site - but come up with a content strategy that you can have others help contribute to and you are a winner both in improved usability AND in SEO

Too many times things like this tend to end up being filled with more spam than they are worth! You will waste more time moderating the content that you really want to spend.
I have had more luck with a wordpress blog installed on my sites. With the proper plugins installed it really cuts down on the spam, and with some creative posts which encourages conversation I get great content going. Setup was also very simple which is another plus, and it also creates more places to market my site as a whole.

I decided to go with a wordpress blog. It framed nicely into my site.
