I've got a friend working on a site and he has it set up this way which looks backwards to me. Is this indeed backwards and if so can you give a brief description of why so that I can show it to him.

Trying to answer my own question I found this:

When somebody links to your website, sometimes they dont always link to you in the way that you want them to. If somebody links to www.yoursite.com and somebody else links to yoursite.com, Google will assign a separate pagerank for each of those. Yes, it is stupid but it is true, by inserting the below example into your .htaccess file, it will solve the problem by redirecting anything linking to yoursite.com to www.yoursite.com, also redirecting the pagerank, so no worries!

Redirect to www (htaccess redirect)

Create a .htaccess file with the below code, it will ensure that all requests coming in to domain.com will get redirected to www.domain.com
The .htaccess file needs to be placed in the root directory of your old website (i.e the same directory where your index file is placed)

Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine on
rewritecond %{http_host} ^domain.com [nc]
rewriterule ^(.*)$ http://www.domain.com/$1 [r=301,nc]

Please REPLACE domain.com and www.newdomain.com with your actual domain name.

Note* This .htaccess method of redirection works ONLY on Linux servers having the Apache Mod-Rewrite moduled enabled.

So this does mean that I want mysite.com to redirect to www.mysite.com rather than the other way around correct?

Doesn't Google tools allow you to do the same thing without the coding??

I could very easily be wrong but I believe google tools would only apply to all things controlled by google. I think this is an item that must be done either on your Server or through your domain name registrar

It doesn't matter which way they redirect as long as their is a canonical URL. The difference between redirecting to www vs non-www is personal preference. Including the www tends to be the standard.

But if all of my linking strategy is based on inbound links addressed to www.mysite.com do I run into problems if things are then redirected to mysite.com ? or are the two looked at as one and the same?
