Default Website inspiration

A website, like any marketing tool, must be updated every now and again. I am curious as to what you all see as highly important in a website and what websites you use for inspiration in terms of features, layout and overall execution. Goes persoanl appeal matter over the sites current success standing.

We all can agree that Google and creigs list is very effective in their use of minimalism but does that work for Real Estate? So what qualities are desired specific to Real Estate or are a good site a good site no matter what market you operate in?

Like any tool, a website is only as important as its productivity. It should not be considered a badge of pride or a statement of art and/or technical sophistication.

Bottom line ... does it generate inquiries relative to the cost of its production and upkeep?

What I have been trying to get across to our President is that "form over function" and "conveyance over content" is bad business.

A site can look fabulous, but if it is all fluff and flash and has poor non-intuitive usability people will leave as quickly as they arrive.

My ultimate goal is for our sites to load fast, be cross-browser and cross-platform compatible, elastic in most screen resolutions, search engine optimized and accessibility compliant.

In other words, I want it to work for ANYONE who visits ... not just a majority who use IE, can see or have hands to click.

I 100% agree that form should not trump function. In addition I agree that a site MUST be cross-platform compatible and viewable in all cases.

But in making a site too general do you risk over generalizing? Does much thought go into appealing to specific segments so that you can get a higher rate of reach and ultimately return from more profitable segments?
