I realize there are many other factors involved and even the quality of backlinks comes into play but is there a certain number of back links that seems to be required in your town to rank #1 on G for the keyword "My town Real Estate"

Locally the number one ranked Realtor on G has 53,000 backlinks. While 4000 - 10,000 seem to be enough to keep you on the first page. My three sites are all in the 7000 - 10,000 range and do pretty well. I just hope that as I have read elsewhere Matt Cutts of google says it's rather unnatural for a local real estate agent to have this many links and penalize me in the future. At least If I go down the guy with 53,000 backlinks will be knocked out as well.

At the same time if you have examples of sites that rank #1 on G for "My town Real Estate" without a large number of back links I'm equally interested, (especially in knowing what they are doing to do so well)

EDIT - The backlinks I have listed are not just G but all major engines. The same guy who has 53K total has 1170 in G in comparison I only have 118

N0 Do a search on this guy, i dont think he has many at all, but still ranks above me

brantsrealtors the software I'm using shows 2708 total, 770 all the web, 778 Alta Vista, 0 Google, 72 MSN and 1088 yahoo

google search result - Results 1 - 10 of about 93 for links: brantsrealtors com. (0.21 seconds)

I don't use it much these days for anything other than keeping a general feel for what everyone else in my market is up to. I've got about 200 of my local competitors listed in the database and run a report once a month to see who's moving and in what direction.

Heh, coastal, sounds like your software is wacked. Yahoo only has 513 external links to that domain. 1080 is the number of all links pointing to the home page only (including internal links).

Checking links in G is totally useless.

IMO Halfdeck is correct about this...

Mike--IMO the quality of the links matters enough to render the number practically useless.

Quality include the source, the body text, the anchor text, the type of link and a WHOLE host of factors...including age as well...

I agree, but... some of my competition has tons of irrelavent links, but still kills me in the rankings. Then again most of them are paying out the rear end for SEO.
