I've got an old website that ranks very well for some very important terms but the site rarely converts anyone. I'm thinking of doing a total rework for the site and I'm wondering what if anything I need to keep from the old site so as not to loose any rank/position.

I'm wondering what you can tell me about clients you've had in the past who scraped what they had in favor of a REW site. Can you make the swap without loosing any rank?

Moved it all over and 301 redirected it, I might of taken a hit because i change some of the content also. I also changed all the titles. I am about back to where i was though. I get about 20 vistors a hour again.

Guys, I owe a few people answers to this very question (Mike Trinch I haven't forgotten about you) I am going to try to write a blog post on it tonight

The quick answer though is - if you do everything correctly, except for a potential slight hiccup there should be no adverse effects at all.

What do you need to do?
Catalouge only internal pages that have links from other websites (backlinks) pointing to them. For most people, this means very few as people tend to build most of their links to the homepage or a select few internal pages.

301 redirect all old pages (That had backlinks) from the old page / filename to the one it is replacing - if there is no replacement page, then 301 redirect to the homepage.

Contact all links you can and inform them of the new link location (This is not necessary, just if you are really anal)

Submit new site to Google webmasters (An xml sitemap)

As for the old pages that are indexed that did NOT have any backlinks, they will simply drop out of the index over time as they are no longer linked to, and the new pages will be spidered at the same time to take their place. (And should maintain SERPS)

One other thing, make sure if you were linking hard coded links from your content to pages, that you change them all as well (Old page to new page or just delete the hyperlink if there is no replacement)

My question is and Drew tried to help me with it, when I switch from AA as my provider and lets say I have 50 pages (I have a lot of dedicated condo complex pages and new construction pages) and the url of those pages basically all look like this: www.miketrinch.com/PageManager/default.aspx/Page........ - How do I 301 redirect them if I get rid of AA and cancel my membership, how do I have control over where that particular page goes? The pages are for sure all indexed in Google I am just not grasping the concept of how I can do a 301 redirect for a page that is no longer mine so to say as it is under the AA web site.

I write a lot of blogs and have links to these long urls as well and obviously any new blogs or links I create with have a much nicer URL for instance MikeTrinch.com/condo-page.php <-- example as it does not exist yet. I am just wondering with all the links to these old URLS with that be a problem.

Ah - the part you are missing is that the 301 is handled on the NEW vendors side, not the old vendors side - so we will be handling the 301 redirects for you - And no we do not have to host the previous page to do the redirect, I can redirect any file (existent or non existent) via the .htaccess to any file that I like, it is all handled virtually
