Social Networking is a good method. Profiles and blog posts.. Maybe some still have reciprocal links. Are you talking about anyone in particular?

What is the best approach I can take to getting lots of backlinks to my website...blog posts? reply's to forum posts? etc.

I think focusing on content has been decidedly better than focusing on backlinks. Try to go for quality links instead of quantity. Write some good blog posts and content and such and that should help you out quite a bit..

Some site have built them naturally others have paid for thousands of links. Most of the paid links are junk directories with little SEO value. You can however pay popular local directories and organizations like your chamber of commerce for links. Many of these can be good links but pretty damn expensive. How much is your time worth?

yea...I have been exchanging links with some real estate directories & local businesses. I was just hoping there was an easier way to build links that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

jeffzane,
Do everything you've mentioned. There's good in doing it all - directories, social bookmarking, article distribution, forum posting and blogging. Just be consistent and make sure everything is quality. A good article can get 100s of links - Nick's right - it's about quality, but IMO consistency comes second. Just try to make all of your efforts meaningful. Some links are better than others; you'd want to get 10 quality on topic links as opposed to 100 or even 1000 crap links. Just keep plugging away and the links will follow.
