I'd stick to real estate industry directories and directories in your local area. Most free general directories are junk. May help a tiny bit but probably not worth the time

While I definately feel a vast majority of free directories are junk, there are some free directories that give great juice/traffic. For example, JoeAnt. I happen to be a believer in free directory submission for developing a diverse link profile. Also, some directories will allow you to deep link for free - this is a great way to get your sub-pages indexed. I'd keep it to a few free directories a day to begin so you don't attract too many links at once. But I have seen a lot of positive results from free directory submission on some of my regional websites and honestly, what's the worse that can happen? You spend 2 mintues submitting to a dud directory?

i think if you get the type of links from hi page ranked sites, you will notice google will spider your site a lot more often. like eric said, deeplinks are great as well. since i started deep linking a few of subpages, they are ranking fairly decent in google for certain keywords. the only thing is though they are ranking right underneath my main page, which i don't understand.

Usually we only submit or directories only allow to submit the main page of the users site, in deep linking you are allowed to submit your inner pages for example your About Us pages and the benefit you'll get in this method is if your inner pages gain PR that could be pass to your main page.
