What is available that people are using that checks the validity of an e-mail before sending or allowing the "customer' access to a site? What I have used in custom applications before sends a ping, sort of like an autoresponder adn verifies that an e-mail is not bogus before allowing the user to use a site or program. Is anyone using this and what?

I've tried to use pinging before. The hang is that some of the major ISP's mail servers -- AOL was bad for a very long time and still is -- fail to respond to validate the existence of an e-mail address.

Of course, one of the reasons is that there are a thousand robots trying to validate millions of e-mail addresses all the time just to spam them.

So you first stall somebody who actually HAS a valid address (while you're validating) and then...kick them because their ISP says they don't.

I'll check for structure validity with a regular expression, check the global location of the server (and boot everybody from Malaysia, Russia, etc., who isn't interested in US real estate anyway), and then let 'em in or send 'em away.
