I am curious what people think of when they think of a hippie.... Now you youngsters will probably have a very different definition...or maybe not. I was a hippie when I was younger, but I'm over 40 and most were. People today use the term and their definitions are surprisingly different than what I would think. Tell me yours if you have time. Thanks.

Thats kindof what I think of too. That peach symbol..flowers in the hair..Sometimes a somewhat lost sole too.

Too funny of a question Susan! Made me chuckle and remember.

Let's see, where do I begin? How about being thought of as a "cool dude, man" (or "cool dudette") for all the gals.

Here are some other things it made me think about and remember this morning:

First, I thought of my old faded Levi's bell bottom jeans (still have 4 pairs and they actually fit me), sandals or square toed Frye boots, hair down to my mid back and all the multi-colored bandannas I used to where to tie it into a ponytail.

Second, I thought of August 15th, 1969?

Third, how much I miss all the really good music that came out of the era - 1964 to 1972 - before disco and rap ruined everything. I still have about 2000 old LP's.

Fourth, how my draft card had a call number 7 on it and how glad I was the war ended before my call date. A couple more months and I would have been on my way to Vietnam. Even though I wanted the war to end, I would have gone if it had happened. Just the way I was raised I guess.

Finally, I thought about why I chose the avatar I use here at the forum. LOL.

Since I at grew up and became a good ole southern boy (re: conservative, gun toting, redneck), I have exchanged my Frye's for snakeskin cowboy boots, cut my hair because it is too hot here in Florida and grew a beard to continue to show my rebellious side instead, still use my bandanna's, just tied around my head to catch the sweat when I'm out fishing and wear sandals almost every day.

I also use the term "peace, love and smoke a joint crowd" a lot to describe all my old friends who chose to never grow up and still run around thinking they can change the world for the better. They are a good group of folks that I periodically still hang with, just very naïve in my opinion.

Guess you can say I'm a redneck on the outside and an old hippie on the inside. Hope to remain that way till the day I die!

I guess I am from a different time period, but to me hippie conotates loser, dead beat, different because they cannot succeed in the main stream.

Not to be negative, but I guess I am gen x not even born yet during the hippie hay day.

Forgive all my typos in the last post...I had a couple glasses of wine earlier.

BD, I remember bell bottom jeans, that cord girls would wear around their head...Indian-like. Yes, there was some really good music...Its scary when you talk to people that don't know the names of the Beatles!! I also remember going to alot of outdoor concerts and walking for hours and hours to get there... I didn't go to Woodstock, but I did go to one in PA, ugh the sites..and I don't mean websites!

I find that today some people use the term hippie as meaning not going with the flow, not the mainstream..rebel.
