Default Freelance Contractor VS Web Development firms -

best way to get your site made?
What is the best way to get a complete site with database created?

My primary goal is to get it done CORRECTLY, but like everyone else I do have a budget. Are local development firms the way to go for advanced projects with large databases, or can freelancers handle it? Should I avoid freelancers for such a big important project or will they do the exact same thing but for cheaper?

Stick with established RE website development firms, like REW. Most local freelancers don't have a clue about how to build a good, lead producing RE website, especially one with IDX or REST feeds, and you will end up spending more time and money educating them and fixing their mistakes than you would with an established, RE-savvy company. Freelancers are often not around for the long term, so you had better be prepared to do it yourself later, or hire and train a new developer every couple of years.

I think it depends on what you are looking for our of your site. A freelancer with experience with IDX or RETS should not experience the same problems mentioned above. A firm will provide a bit of a canned solution, but customized to you. Usually this comes along with niceties of tools that are already developed and quicker development time. A good freelancer may be willing to provide more customized features at a better price.

It is so important to create a website the right way from the start. If your site has a bad foundation, you'll either be starting over a year from now or have something that it a nightmare to maintain. This is definitely an area where you get what you pay for! The experience of the person building the site is the important thing. You could have a freelancer with 15 years experience vs. a large firm where a 21 year old recent college grad is working on their first project, or vice versa. Freelancer vs development firm might not be the best way to decide.
