I made a new page on my site under featured listings.
I then basically copy/pasted the property description, and a couple of fotos, onto Active rain and Craigslist, with links back to my site. how possible is it for my active rain blog to get penalized for duplicate content? let's say the title of the Active rain blog was the property address. The blog shoots to #1 position on google for the address. does that get downgraded over time? It seems to have diappeared a couple of days later.

There is not "duplicate content" penalty, however you are doing potential harm to your own websites reputation, or ability to earn said reputation as now Active Rain will show up "instead" of your page (Because AR has more authority than you do)

thanks Morgan.
right now, the AR and CL listings get indexed a lot faster, and move to #1. I posted something on AR the other day, and it was at #1 for a search of the property address. Now it can't be found. So, I was wondering if i was penalized somehow, or do the AR posts just fade away. Whatever your crew did for me on SEO has worked wonders. Do you see anything else that they can do for me? My manager's assistant called my site 'a beast'. I like that. |

I may be wrong but I believe Google puts the freshest content up to the #1 position to test its stickiness. Then drops it down.

Definitely not #1 (Unless the site had enough authority) but you are correct that Google has implemented many tweaks to the algo over the past few years to ensure that "fresh content" makes it into the mix wherever appropriate. This is certainly 1 factor in Gregs situation, another is, that bury factor of user contributed sites such as AR or REW - When you post your post at REW or AR, it is at the top of the list on the main page, and let's say there are 10-15 posts on that main page (This main page has the most visibility, pagerank, authority etc) as more people post after you, your posts drops down the list, eventually to page 2, page 3 etc and soon you are so far away from any of the main pages, that the post is not getting enough juice to stay out of supplemental. This is a really good reason to "POST OFTEN" - more importantly though, is don't just post often to keep your blog spidered, treat it like any other site. Build your own inbound links to your REW Blog profile, so that it does not have to depend on the juice from the site you are posting on.
For those of you that posted AR badges for "Points" remove them so that you are not in a reciprocal situation (Points ain't worth squat) or at the very least, add a no follow, or change the link destination so that it links to YOUR AR profile and not the main AR website.

Greg,
If memory serves, we did very little for you so I am very pleased to hear your positive feedback - we can do a LOT for you from an SEO perspective in my estimation, and if you are already seeing some positive organic returns, you might want to consider a budget / energy on some of the other aspects that will increase your closed deals such as conversion of visitors to leads (This should constantly be worked on) and leads to sales (This is on you, but we can certainly consult with you on best practices)

AR posts can be indexed like lightening if they are the first of duplicate content. So if you post on your blog/site and then on the same day to AR, AR may get picked up first. What you pose elsewhere won't get indexed and will be useless to SEO.

ok. thanks everyone.
strangest thing, though -- the AR post went back to #3 for a google search of the address. my CL post is #1, and my REW IDX details page was #2. |

I have heard this before but my site recently jumped to page one then dropped back to page 2 and I have not modified my content at all. I was quite excited for a while. Hopefully it is a sign of things to come. Do you think changing content would be a good idea at this time or no?
