Default Google Sitemaps

Check out Google Sitemaps.

You can submit a sitemap as an XML feed or a text file.

Wow. Thanks for the link

An important page from my perspective was https://www.google.com/webmasters/si...n/faq.html#s10 where it talks about validating the feed. I don't have python on my host but do want the feed so will be looking at generating my own.

Has anyone written a PHP generator?

I'm happy to get the list of pages, just something to spew out the xml and ping google.

Good find.

I'd be interested in seeing tests done with this to determine how it effects page cache, indexing and/or search results.

Here's a blog entry decoding the xml

http://www.socialpatterns.com/search...-sitemaps-xml/

I imagine that many of us won't want to use the official Google tool but will generate our own. It's important, then, to know what we are trying to generate!

Reporting back...

I used the wordpress tool at http://www.socialpatterns.com/search...ith-wordpress/

to create a blog sitemap at http://sarahk.pcpropertymanager.com/...glesitemap.php

Now to register it and see what happens. I would have thought that blogs were pretty easily indexed anyway but it'll be interesting.

FYI.....I submitted my site map 4 days ago. There are ~7000 entries in my site map. Google has gone from indexing ~450 (been between 350 and 450 for months) to ~900 and I have moved up from ~8 to ~5 for my primary keyword.

That was pretty quick. Hope that it continues to help your site, please keep us updated.

Google have been coming back and rechecking the index so I don't think I'm going to need to ping google.

I'd be interested to know whether the template based CMS systems for realtors are up to speed on this.
