Default Question about Duplicate Content

Is there any type of penalty from Google on duplicate content? If there is not any penalty, is it worthwhile to submit articles and blog posts to as many sites as possible?

If this was covered I tried to search and didn't find anything.

Kevin,

Right from Google's Webmaster Blog:

"Duplicate content doesn't cause your site to be penalized."

Thanks John,

Guess I have some cut and pastin to do. The only reason not to repost blog entries is if mine are unique they will get organic hits, whereas if I repost them on other sites, that site will get the hit from better serp?

It doesn't cause your site to be penalized; however, I do believe one of the copies will be devalued.

Nick is correct. Google will try to determine the original source of the article and devalue copies.

If you are going to syndicate content that is already on your site, I would read the tips in Vanessa Fox's post:

By one, I meant if there were only two. I recall something about the higher ranking one not being touched but anything lower(in terms of ranks) would be devalued.

John and Nick as always I appreciate the information. It seems the safest route would be to only use articles as the entries for various submission sites or older blog posts that are already indexed by SE's?

We have 2 exterior blogs and a page on our site for news and updates. All the locations have the mostly the same content and I've never noticed a change in position or ranking or any kind of penalty. We use ActiveRain extensively as well as WordPress - both of these sites are getting us great recognition on Google and generate lots of traffic to our main website.

I did read, at one point, that duplicate content is bad, bad, bad. But my question was this: if my listings are being syndicated to many many websites, wouldn't that be considered duplication? If so, then I was afraid I would be penalized because all the listings would link back to our website and I was SURE that I'd see a decrease in position/ranking. I never have seen a decrease or anything that would suggest that duplication is bad.

So I'm happy to read: Right from Google's Webmaster Blog:

"Duplicate content doesn't cause your site to be penalized."

If you're going to post an article on your site, and distribute it elsewhere, it's a good idea to link back to the original article so that it helps Google identify the original source.

I think that it may be a different case with things like Listings and such. It's such a small amount of content that's being copied, I don't think it will even register with Google. It seems kind of like a waste of time. I could see them going after the people copying huge blocks of text and stuff.. but not listings.

Plus, I think Google knows the difference between some necessary listings and some content being ripped off. Just my thoughts, though.
