I have a number of sites that have put our link on them but when I go to check the inbound links with my link checker (http://www.webconfs.com/reciprocal-link-checker. php) it doesn't show certain ones. Does anyone know why?

How old are the links. google wants to see them link to you for a while. They will also only show you a few of the sites that link to you.
I use webconfs my self have you tried wholinkstome. com

the links are extremely new, within the last 30 days... perhaps I need to just wait a bit longer? i will try the site you suggested. Thanks!

You need to wait longer.
Plus, I have heard that many link checkers don't accurately reflect what Google is really seeing.

That is right. It is actually goolge that does not want you to know everything they are doing. Web master tools will show you just about every link possible, but you do not know what counts and what does not and or for how much

Hey Jen,
setup a google webmaster account for your website and they will show you exactly what they consider as a link to you in their 'pages with external links' section. Same for yahoo and msn live. Webmaster accounts can be setup for free at the links below for all 3: MSNLive: http://webmaster.live.com/ Yahoo: http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com Google: http://www.google.com/webmasters/ Hope this helps!

I have done that but not all the links are showing up. Certain ones that I've gone back to check are on the specific site but do not show up on the webmaster reports. Strange.

If you just signed up, it probably could take a while for it to crawl and put it in your webmaster account. I've had links not show up in the webmaster acc for 2 weeks.

Hey Jen,
You might give it another 30 days. I'm not saying this sarcastically when I say that the internet is HUGE! And whatever links that you might get to your site will take a while to show up in those webmaster accounts. If after 60 days, they don't show up in any of those 3 accounts, and you're not receiving traffic from them, then just go ahead and drop them if you're forking over a fee for them. My view is, if there's no traffic and the major 3 search engines don't consider them a valid link, then why bother with them. I would like to give 1 huge pointer here that has helped me out tremendously on other link projects. This pertains mainly to google, but probably more so than I know to other search engines. What you want is link normalization for your linking campaigns. So if building about 0-5 links per week is normal for you, then keep building about 0-5 links per week. YOU WILL GET PENALIZED in search engines if your average is 5 links per week and all of a sudden you get 1000 links back to your site. This is an extremely easy calculation for search engines to see if someone is trying for search engine manipulation. Quick example: It's very normal for cnn.com to get thousands of links to it per day from people citing news stories. If your site, (or any real estate site for that matter) got this kind of volume all of a sudden, you will get penalized and drop from the SERPS (search engine result pages). Eventually over time, this penalization will be removed as the rate at which new links are made to your site will average out to something normal (numbers will normalize). One example I ran into was we made personalized layouts for myspace and other social networking sites for a football commerce site. They were a hit and of course we threw an seo selfish link in there. I knew of the normalization penalty and informed the client of that ahead of time. Within weeks we received thousands of new links back to the commerce site. We got slapped with the penalty and over time, this amout of links became normal and we came back stronger than ever. I know this is probably MUCH more than you wanted to know, but looked like a good opportunity to drop this nugget of information. Hope this helps!
