I was wondering what kind of linking strategy you guys have had success with.
I am considering making tons of sites linking to the target page and need an effective way to focus the PageRank. I have written simulations in java but am fairly sure that google PR is a little more complicated than their Stanford paper. This is why I am asking you guys. We have a huge database of unique data that we can use to make this pages unique and really useful, so we wont be spamming, just creating a huge megasite. Mwhahahaha! Thanks |

dont worry about PR propogation throughout your domain, it holds no water now, more important is just logically organizing your data for the users benefit. As long is nothing further then 3 (MAx 4) clicks away from an inbound PR source your fine.

Linking to your sitemap from every page in the footer is just good practice anyways, its makes it accessible to your users wherever they are, but also will allow at least some PR to propogate from the mainpage to any other page within 2 clicks

Taken out of context it looks that way, however no i'm not. Pagerank itself is not what allows pages to rank, it is a vessel for getting your site spidered deeper and more often, take amazon for instance, any page it places (within reason) ranks easily just by being integrated into the logical navigation of the website, sometimes 4-5 clicks from the index. These pages have 0 pr and never will because of Amazons linking structure, however they are reachable in the domain via the logical navigation and that + their associated attachment to the quality domain is what allows the individual page to rank

I see your point, but you did say "it holds no water right now." I took that to mean that it has no value.

Yeah, wrong use of phrase I suppose, PR has lots of benefits but a better ranking is not one of them, the ranking comes from the link itself, and the anchor text used, not the PR of the link. It used to be very important as Im sure you remember, in fact I used to be an authority in using Javascript to channel pagerank, its just we got so damn good at it, google decided to change the weight in the algo {PR ~rank} Other members please dont construe my comment as Pr isnt important IT IS! Its just passing pagerank to a page does not help that page rank for a certain kw phrase

If better rankings are not a benefit of PR, what are the benefits?

Benefits of pagerank are more frequent google spidering, deeper crawls, weighted authority to the site as a "system" and of course because everyone else is so hung up on it, the higher your PR the easier it is to get the themed links with the anchor text you need to specific pages to boost rank.
