Negative impact of rankings tools like Market Leap

I was reading late one evening and remember reading that using tools that search for site placement could hurt your site with the major search engines. I thought that I read it on one of the major SEO sites but have not been able to find the thread again.

So for those of you with the experience, is there a downside to using tools like Market Leap and others that help track the status of websites?

I have found the Market Leap tool to be one of the best for checking out not only my site but my competitors for the top keywords in my market area, remember reading with concern that it may not be such a good idea to do so, and now looking for guidance.

I can't see there being a problem as long as the tool is using a Google API key.
