Default Reason for Password Registration?

I'm just wondering if the different registration (requiring a password be set up) that the LEC's have is a result of feedback from agents? I'm thinking I might want it like it was before, requiring just an email and optional phone number. But I wanted to see what the reasoning was behind it. From what I remember, visitors can still set up a saved search, and the email was treated as the password. Seems this might be easier for returning visitors.

I'm curious to know how many of you with an LEC are using the password registration?
