Can someone explain the difference, and how I know if a blog is dofollow or not, and also the relevance to SEO?

You can look in the source code for the nofollow attribute (eg. rel="nofollow") or if you're using firefox there's an extension called search status that will highlight all of the nofollow links on a page.

As far as SEO, SE's claim to give no ranking benefit to nofollowed links.

So does that mean that they do give benefit to dofollow links? Is there a simpler way to find out if something is dofollow other than looking at the source code?

Yea, if you're using firefox you can install the extension here https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/321 (you just have to set to highlight nofollow links and they'll stand out like a sore thumb)

Yea again on the credit for dofollow links (which would be the lack of the nofollow attribute).

also many dofollow links do not kick in until certain criteria is met, such as number of posts in a forum on contributions on a blog...

OK I think I get it. I need to really come up with a link building system I seem to spend most of my time reading about it rather than actually doing anything!

One of the things you need to realize Gloria is that worrying about do follow vs no follow commenting is a very short sighted link building strategy - you should be evaluating where to participate (blogs, forums etc) based on their ability to increase your reputation amongst your website controlling audience and also where you can make the best long term relationships (which lead to long term quality links vs short term comment links which are not very useful at all.

Also, I've found that I've gotten tons of traffic from several nofollow links, so I try not to pay too much attention to whether they are dofollow or not.

nofollow is still being used. If google dropped it there would be 1000s of blog posts and news articles about it. I think the article you saw was related to internal page sculpting and impact nofollow has within your own internal site links.
