Default Do the Google Sitemaps matter?

I am a newbie, with a new site which isn't even 2 months old yet, but was wandering if setting up the google sitemap makes any difference. I am, of course a PR 0 , but I did setup a sitemap in my directory. I will be working on the backlinks for the next few months. Anyway, any input on weather the sitemap will do any good.

I have heard a few webmasters say that it has helped get more or all of their pages indexed. If I had a new site it would be added for sure. Why not take advantage of an easy and free way to get your pages indexed faster.

It comes down to professionalism and thoroughness. It will take time before someone sets up two seemingly identical sites, but giving one a sitemap and monitors their success.

Anything that helps your site's visibility has to be worth an hour's programming, surely?

I believe that putting together a google sitemap from the beginning has helped get (what I believe is) all of my site's pages indexed - with the site just launching last month, that's pretty solid.

With any website I build from this point forward, in addition to a sitemap for visitors a sitemap for Google will be part of the program.
