Default submitting redirect domains to Google

I started trying to figure out SEO and different areas a few months ago. I have a problem right now and I know this forum can clarify the situation.

I have another domain address that I will be using soon on signage located next to a busy drive through. That domain address will point to the home evaluation page on my web site. So my questions are:

1. I have submitted that domain name to google for indexing but there is no content unless it links to my web site. Am I in contravention of one of google's rules? If I am how do I fix it? I also submitted to yahoo.

2. When I google the URL I get the message "Sorry no information ..." then the 3 choices below that. If I click on " if this URL is valid .... " it takes me to my web site. How do I get Google to immediately recognize the address as valid? Yahoo has it on the first search.

3. When I try it on MSN there's no information and they ask to have it submitted if its a valid address. But if it's only a redirect (I guess that's the right term) and I submit it, will I be doing something against their rules?

Appreciate any feedback
Larry

You do not want any of the search engines to see 2 domains with the same content. This is a good way to run into duplicate content issues and look like you are spamming the SE's.

Make your 2nd domain name 301 redirect to your main domain name or just get rid of it.

I agree having duplicate content is a quick way to get tin trouble especially with google. The 301 redirect will take care of it.

Okay so this will tell you how much I don't know. What's a 301 redirect and how do I do that?

301 redirect is a permanantly moved redirect and is the correct choice for google and the other SE's - http://www.tamingthebeast.net/articl...1-redirect.htm will tell you how to implement, or if you do not have mod_rewrite installed or the knowlege necessary to implement contact your web developer or host and request that they

"301 redirect unhosted domain, to hosted domain"

Larry,

Point2 is now (I think) properly handling 301 permanent redirects without any masking. If you've chosen one url as your default domain & your other url as a secondary domain Point2 will automatically redirect it. Of course, this secondary domain needs to be registered with Point2.

What wasn't answered yet is whether Larry will be penalized in any way for trying to submit the redirected url to Google & Yahoo.

I don't think that submitting the redirect will have any negative effect. If that were the case we could submit our competitors redirects and get them in trouble. Also submitting is not the best way to get crawled. Linking to the redirect would give it a better chance of being crawled sooner.

I don't think that linking to the redirect will hurt it either....I have a few customers that went with new domain names recently and redirected thier old domains which had existing backlinks...so far no issues!

Actually, P2 is still NOT handeling 301 redirects the right way if you have the second domain pointing to an internal page! I have been on the phone with those guys for two-three weeks now trying to clue them in.
