SEO Aaron installed my new blog (his first Wordpress install) yesterday on my Cook County web site. I was able to create categories, add posts, learned how to insert photos and deleted the blogroll that was already on there.

My first question is that there is a Meta heading (right hand side of the blog page) with my admin links under. Should that be there? If not, how do I get rid of it without screwing things up?

Next, I need a new theme! I downloaded a new one & my problem is with uploading it. I've never used my file manager nor have I actually used ftp. I was up 'til the wee hours trying to figure this out. Here's where I'm stumped: Wordpress says "Using an FTP client to access your host web server, create a directory to contain your theme in the wp-content/themes directory provided by WordPress." I can't find a wp-content... directory in my files. I thought maybe I need to create it (I was in my file manager in my c-panel) but it says it was provided.

Can anyone help me with one or both of these items? Thanks!

I can't find a wp-content... directory in my files.

During the installation, properly installed, wp will create

wp-content | themes | default & classic

folders.

To install a new theme, you upload the entire theme folder as a new folder under themes; e.g., you would see

wp-content | themes | default & classic & newthemefolder

then, the next time you log-in as admin, wp will see the new theme (folder) when you click on Presentation allowing you to select that theme as default.

Most themes are downloaded in .zip file format to your hard disk, unpacked, then uploaded to your server via an ftp program.

It's something that I do all the time for myself and my customers.

BTW, show the URL to your blog, I might be able to offer further advice.

Since I can't find seem to find that wp-content folder does that mean it wasn't installed properly or am I not looking in the right place? I'm looking at my files through my File Manager on my c-panel. I'll have to direct SEO Aaron to this thread.

It should be in the file manager. Look for the "public-html" folder. It should be in there. Unless you haven't FTP the theme onto the site yet. In that case, do you know how to FTP files onto your website?

The Meta is there just because of the way the default theme is presented. You will have to do some digging around inside the theme to change the name to something else. It shouldn't mess anything up, but remember to make backups.

tells me that he installed wp to a folder named 'blog', which you can look for in your cpanel.

The other folders I mentioned are stored in the 'blog' folder.

The Meta info is a function of the wp install and one of the items shown is your Login link. These can be removed by editing 'sidebar.php' in the theme folder.

Also, you will notice in the two real estate web sites in my sig that I take the blog postings and feed them into the home page of wilkes-nc-real-estate. Doing so gives the search engines fresh content each day. A 'white-hat' SEO trick.

I opened the public html folder but there's no "wp-content" file. I can get help with the ftp to upload the theme files so can I just upload them to the public folder? It doesn't have to be the wp folder?

I'll try to remove that meta-admin stuff from my theme sidebar.

As for the other stuff I still have to learn the basics - LOL! I feel like I did when I first started trying to create a web site. Actually, that was easier for me than this is.
