Default Problem with Domain Names for Internal Pages?

Hi,

I've got a question I hope I can get some help with. I know that Yahoo, at least, says that they don't like multiple domains pointing to a website.

What I'm wondering is whether there is a down-side from an SEO standpoint, if you do a 301 redirect on a domain name to internal pages in a website. For example, if you had a page that focused on a specific neighborhood, would you be hurt in the rankings if you got a separate domain name and redirected it to that page? Or, if you used a street address domain and redirected it to the page containing that listing?

Any help is appreciated.

Kathleen

The domain has no value if there are no links to it so a redirect to your page wouldn't help if I understand correctly.

Thanks for the post, VRI.

The issue is more for ease of landing on the page vs. trying to get rankings for the domains pointing to internal pages.

So, the question is, if I don't care about ranking for that domain name, will directing it to an internal page annoy the search engines?

IMO You won't have a problem with a 301 redirect as you are not trying to fool the search engine, i.e visitors and seach engines will see the same page. I have done the same thing for an artist who had an existing domain but wanted one with her name because she felt it was more professional looking on her brochures and business cards and easier for her clients to remember. We redirected artist-name.com to her existing domain. It was only one redirected domain, I don't know if multiple domains redirected to a site would trigger any red flags.

So long as the 301 redirect is done properly it should cause no problems. We've done the same for a client who wanted a relavent domain name pointing directly to their homes for sale by owner page of an existing mortgage website. Now main domain lands at theirdomain.com/index.html while the second domain lands at theirdomain.com/fsbo.html

This is a great point, and I dont think that there would be any problem unless the multiple domain redirects were abused. 2-3 pointing to internal pages should not be a problem.
