Is it always more expensive to renew a domain name than purchasing one outright? My first domain name is up for renewal and I orginally paid $20+ for it before learning about less expensive options.

I went to a different domain place but since it hasn't expired yet it charges more to reserve the domain than just purchasing one that isn't in use. I'm afraid if I let it expire someone might pick it up (knowing it has been used before) & try to sell it back to me at an inflated price.

Anyone been in this situation? I'd like to purchase 10 years but at the renewal price that's a lot more than paying $5-$10/yr. I just feel like I'm being ripped off.

I am confused. If I am reading it correctly you are asking if it's worth risking letting your domain expire then rebuying it?? NO if that is the question, spammers pick up sites that expire if they have links pointing to them. Have seen this with more than a few link partners who end up becoming porn sites (another reason to check your links every so often).

You just have to transfer the domain to any registar you want, it is really easy. The only catch is you can't do it just be renewal, so if you are close you might have to pay for one year with your current registar then transfer it and add the other 9 years.

BTW the "reserve the domain" thing applies to domains you don't own and one that you want to try and snag when they expire.

Thanks pcdoc but I waited too long (I've been sick for at least a week) & now there's not enough time. I actually called & they told me to renew with the prior place & wait 60 days to do the transfer. Now I know how to handle future domains if I feel the need to transfer them. Thanks, guys.
