One resource that's well worth reading through can be found at http://www.resourcereports.com/uploads/Web_Tips.pdf
It's a precis of Ten Tips put together by Allen Hainge, who heads up the CyberStars organization -- an assemblage of top agents who, along with Allen, KNOW how to make a real estate website work. Best of all, despite a normal charge of $49 US, it's now available free -- and don't be put off by Allen's (gentle) plugs for what you can pay him for, even though this is unquestionably worth every penny you spend with him. Well that is certainly not a "web design" book per se' but he did have some interesting ideas. Although you really have to sift through all the self promotion and common sense (Maybe it isnt to everyone) to get to the interesting points.
One of the things I liked was his suggestion for capturing listings which most websites have a really hard time doing. And that was to post all of your interested buyers that you are actively searching for a home for - I could forsee "Just look at all the people who are using me to find a home, and that I could expose your home to" - real examples, I have never tried it, but the concept is sound. I really have a problem with all of his "you must do this, have this or buy this" and then right away he says "by the way my products do this. A lot of the "musts" I see as things that may work for some people but would not help at all for others, but again, sift through this stuff and you get some good ideas. Other suggestions I would take: Make sure you have access to the MLS and feature your own properties prominantly Make sure you include area information (Good for SEO and your visitors especially relo) Make your about us information personal, not just credentials - you are a sales person, sell yourself. I really struggle sometimes reading things like this as a lot of us have come to know it as common sense, however taking myself out of my sphere of expertise, If I were a brand new realtor just getting a website set up, I think this paper is an excellent read. Thanks for the post Duncan, I think a lot of the members here will find it very useful. Sorry for semi hijacking the web design book thread with my article review, but this is the first paper like this that I was actually compelled to read all of.
