duplicate content
Thanks for putting up with me, I'm still trying to track down why I would be penalized by google.
I went through my link directory looking for "bad neighbors" and found none. 1200 links took all night. Now I'm thinking it could be duplicate content. I have two real estate sites, they both have the same link dierectory content. The templates are different but the database I use to create them is the same. Would that erk google? www.coastalmobile.com/links www.bwbeach.com/links Same content different template.

That agent/broker category alone is fat, representing the bulk of your content. Spiders pretty much ignore the template html code. +98% of the content is dupe. How about this:
Host categories A thru M on site 1, categories N thru Z on site 2? The "links" links on both sites point to site 1-A thru M. At the bottom of the 'A thru M' page have a link to 'N thru Z', which is hosted on the 2nd site. Just a thought. Anybody care to chime in?

Unless something has changed that I'm not aware of duplicate content penalties are assigned to a "page". So if a page in your directory was considered a duplicate of a page in another directory only your page would be affected.

Something similar happened to a member of this forum some time ago. I don't think the entire site was penalized. I think her link exchange pages were deindexed.
I have multiple sites and create different pages and some different link partners for each site just to prevent this from happening. And it is more work. However, a couple of my sites are smaller, niche areas so I don't need as large a link program as I do for my more general site.

Temporarilly moved all my links off to another site while I rebuild my directory into something that will look different to google. I guess over the next week I will see if it makes any difference.

Coastal, it can take a lot longer than a week to see changes make their way through Google's index.
For what it's worth I really don't think a few potential duplicate pages in your directory is causing your site to be penalized. Which pages on your site do you think are being penalized?

I was #1 for most of my keywords and now I don't show up at all. How does a page go from #1 to not showing up? I can understand a competitor moving up or down a few places bumping me a little bit here and there but to fall off the map for every single keyword? I must have done something wrong but I sure don't know what. No creepy re-directs no spam that I know of, no linking to casinos or porn. I checked 1200 links on my site one at a time to make sure there were no grey sites on my list.
It took eight hours. If 70 % to 80 % of people start their search for homes on the web and google has 50 + % of that market I'm screwed if google drops me from it's list. To top it off I bust my rear working on my site and for google to bump me for no known reason makes me want to shoot someone:-) If they had sent me an e-mail and said Mr. Brown we are bumping you off our list for this reason, at least I would know why. As it is I've spent the better part of the last week trying to analyze ever character of code on my site. I know life is not fair but this really sucks. I had an open house two weeks ago with my google results sky high and I had 40 people come, I had an open house today with Zero google results and 6 people came.
