Web Site Files Complaint Against Google
A class action that some of you will find of interest http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/03/17/D8GDKG900.html . I think most class actions are just a good way for the attorneys to make a lot of money, increase costs of most goods for all consumers, and those that were allegedly harmed to get a coupon for a discount on some goods. I am betting that if G looses the case, you guys will get a discount coupon on PPC or some other poppy cock while the legal team will get hundreds of millions. Will be interesting to watch though.

Cal,
What a find. I don't disagree with your analysis of class action suits. But, it will do my heart good if Google gets in some trouble on this one. Kathleen

Resale,
This paragraph really hit home: "KinderStart's lawsuit alleges Google's policing efforts have penalized Web sites that have done nothing wrong. To make matters worse, the suit alleges the banished sites can't determine how they can restore their standings because the company doesn't explain its actions." --From the article posted I have heard (well, seen) the same problem identified in forums all over the Net. After the last Jagger update, there were folks who dropped off the map, didn't know why, didn't know if they'd reappear. The one that really struck me was from a small Internet retailer who was trying to 1) figure out what caused the dump after being top on Google for years, and having no way to tell what went wrong or how to fix it, and 2) figure out if he should order Christmas inventory in case he bounced back before the holiday or just write off the Christmas season altogether. I believe Google does hold a lot of power over people's livelihood. And, while I can understand their need for keeping the algorithm secret, I can't help but believe that as a good corporate citizen, they should take some steps to address the issue noted in the article. I also understand that it would be a gigantic effort to be able to respond to queries from dropped sites. But, they created this monster, and IMNSHO, they're smart enough to figure out how to do more than they do. Thus ends my rant for the day. Kathleen

Web site owners are sometimes myopic. They focus on themselves, not the visitors.
Google is intended to support visitors with the best search results, which keeps them coming back to Google for future searches. If a site engages in "spammy" SEO tactics, intentionally or not, that's tough. If they merely repeat what can be found elsewhere, like in affiliate marketing strategies, that's tough. Google organic search results are for visitors, not web site owners. If you want to perform well in organic results, focus on what the visitor wants, not what your business needs. Basically, it is like going to a listing appointment and the seller says, "I need to net THIS much," or, "I put this much improvement into my house, so it should sell for THIS much," and so on... Every agent knows that what someone "needs" or how much they put into a property doesn't affect market value. What a siteowner "needs" or expects does NOT affect search results. For that, you have PPC ads.
