Question Thinking of changing my site look, will it affect my search engine rank?

I'd like to replace my old ugly site with something newer and cleaner. How much will it affect my search engine placement?

If I'm already doing pretty well is there any reason to change the site?

Obviously I'll try and keep titles and keywords about the same as they were.

Done properly, none at all; keeping same file names and / or doing 301 re-directs.

What's pretty well?

Maybe a change will result in a 'real well'.

If you think it needs to be cleaned up then I'm sure that will benefit your visitors. As pcdoc mentioned, make sure you keep your pages intact (same urls, estensions) unless you're adding new content. This will prevent any dupe content pages from coming up.

Agree - agree and agree: The majority of the hardest rankings to get are domain and backlink related, not onpage related anyways (Google) - For example take Judy's oak lawn site, when it was snapped, and there was nothing but ads on the site, it only lost 1-2 places on the first page of google (From #1 to #3) that shows that it was held up there by the off-page factors (Backlinks and directories etc)

However - I think a lot of people fall into a trap with their sites - they have been working with them for a long time, and also viewing and admiring other sites. After a while they seem to get bored of their design, or get design envy of another site and want to "upgrade" their design. (Which again is fine to do from a search engine rankings perspective) But!

What is your site converting at? If it is a high visitor to lead ratio, I honestly wouldnt mess with it, if it is not that great then yes its worth looking at a redesign.

My highest clickthrough rate for adsense, is on a site that I through up as a placeholder until I could get around to actually designing it. Now it generates an amazing click through rate, and I dont want to change it, even though I personally think it looks 20% designed. Unless the clickthrough rate drops, I aint touchin it - I will just keep adding content and building links and enjoy my site in all its ugliness.
