Default Dup content on articles and blogs

I think this has been addressed, but I can't remember the post... If I post on a blog and then submit the same info as an article to various article sites, will this be considered dup content and penalize me?

To my knowledge, a duplicate content "penalty" is that the duplicate pages are dropped from the index. I also believe the first page indexed (it's a race ) is the page that remains in the index.

Don't some sites require that the article isn't posted elsewhere? Although if others can use the same article, how could this be enforced? And why would people want to trade articles to begin with?

This is something I've been wondering about too.

I would love to hear opinions on this.

What seems to stand out from what I've been following so far is that the articles we submit should not be on our sites, but should contain links to our sites.

Is this correct or am I misunderstanding?

I don't do to much of the article thing because of the same concerns. The prevailing school of thought is that the duplicate content is not immediately applied against different domains if it is at all... I have not seen any reliable data but from what I've seen it does appear to stay in the index. (it is early yet, and it's just a matter of time IMO)

If at some point the duped article gets canned, you've still had a few months of decent links from your one article. If you're gonna use article submissions I'd suggest you get it cached on your site before submitting.

You can post it on your own site but it's safe to use rel="nofollow" in the link code to the article page and <meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow"> in the article page itself... This way you'll have the page for your visitor but it will be invisible for search engines.

O.K. just a couple of thoughts. When some one here mentioned that if you have an article on your site that people then use as content for other websites Google penalizes you this is not true. As an example you can look at article sites like mine, which allows free posting by the way, and see that alexa ranks it pretty high and google has indexed about 450 pages. You can look at other article sites and see that they rank pretty high too, so if this was true since they host hundreds of articles that people have downloaded and posted else were, they should then be the lowest ranked sites. This is not the case so I guess I've proven my point.

Oh yeah at ArticlesCorner you can also post PODCasts for others to download and give you even more exposure.

Sorry for the plugs but I could not resist. I hope this helps.

Alexa Ranking is just that, "Alexa Ranking". It has nothing to do with Google SERPs or duplicate content penalties.

You are right but again take a look at the PR for some of these article sites and also at the number of pages that Google has indexed. It is tru that Google gives more value to unique content, but duplicate articles still count for something.

If duplicate content was penalized then every news site would never have good serps, and all rss would have trouble. this is duplicate content. Complete duplicate sites are penalized. Pages in your site with the same title, tags and content within your site will get the smakdown on you. The rest is nothing more than fables, Just like the sandbox.
