Just curious, I keep hearing people say you have to keep your links to under 100 on a page. Some say google only goes down the first 100 links some say you will loose being indexed if you have more than 100 links to a page.
This page has right at 200 links and I checked to see if it was cached in google and there it is. ctucsonhomes.com/link_exchange.shtml so is caching the same as indexed? I'm still learning a lot and just wonder about this like this when I run into them. thanks for any clarification or input. Dave

The less than 100 links per page is for a lot of reasons.
#1 - you dont give your partners any real reason to want to link with you if they have to share a page (And its pagerank) with 199 other links #2 - Google states this (Or used to) as a quality guideline. Although truthfully from a limitation standpoint it should read "keep your pages under 100k #3 - it just looks spammy and unprofessional when a page is just a huge list of disorganized unformatted links There are likely lots of other reasons I could post, but the point is, its just bad practice.

Oh btw, cached and indexed are 2 different things
Cached means the search engine has a snapshot of your website on file. Indexed means the seach engine has the link in its database.

According to Google's Webmaster Guidelines:
"Keep the links on a given page to a reasonable number (fewer than 100)." Google Information for Webmasters ![]()

Thanks for the input, so how do you know if your pages are indexed?

Google does say, less than 100 but Morgan is on it with the 100k file size and the rationale on keeping the number down. To see if the page is indexed you can paste the url in question into the search box.

If it has been indexed soon enough it will show pr when Google next updates it. Typically it has been roughly quarterly.... with a good deal of variation.

There's also a feeling that the search engines considers the important links to be those it reads first as it scans the source code of the page. Tests have been done but can't point to any off the top of my head.
