Default Next Generation Search

This is from an article originally called, "Next Generation Search Engines"

"By analyzing a web's links, search engines can determine with greater reliability if a web site is actually related to the search inquiry. This analysis is basically done in two steps. First, the search engine does a traditional search for web pages containing the query word or phrase. Then the search engine counts the number of links to and from other web pages containing the same word or phrase. The higher the number, the higher the "confidence level" that the page or site fits the search request."

Here's what's funny about the above quote:

It was published on June 10, 1999 in Realty Times, seven years ago, at a time when most agents were very stingy about outward bound links from their sites. It is different world now.

The point? Don't just figure out what works now or what used to work. Think about what will work in the future.

If only I had a better crystal ball...

There is an opinion article in theregister.com "The worse Google gets, the more money it makes?"

The main point of the article is that Google has lost control of their alogos which in reality is good for Google because the deterioration of organic search drives paid advertising

My favorite quote in the article.
Quote:
When Google unleashed PageRank™ on the world, it really created a monster.

Google was so proud of its algorithm that it liked to boast that it mirrored the "inherent democracy" of the internet, a phrase which coyly and insidiously, flatters us all. PageRank™ was a truer representation of life than we ever realized, Google said, if only we cared to look.

The trouble is, PageRank only worked within a small dataset of peer reviewed academic journals. ...
