Can anyone explain why large shifts occur with the pages that google reports in their index?

I've been working on a very new site and one day 20 pages will show up within Google as indexed, the next day only 12, the following day only 6. The process then seems to repeat itself. I've checked across google datacenters and the # of pages reported as indexed is always consistent across the various data centers. This is especially frustrating since i'm:
- adding new pages of custom content daily,
- utilizing a good google sitemap which I would think would help the process,
- getting a lot of good inbound links to my site from PR 3-5 sites

Other search engines (Yahoo, MSN) have all done a fairly good job of indexing the site, it just seems like google is out to pasture.

Can anyone shed any light on why this might be happening with google and how I might be able to resolve it? I know things usually work themselves out with time however I would like to try and expedite the process or at least not do anything that would cause further delays.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The only thing I can think of if they are consistant across the DC's is that they are reverting across the entire DC to different sets of data, at different times.

Do the dates change on the cache when one set shows up vs the other?

Pay attention to his real estate examples. How odd could it be for a real estate site to link with a mortgage site? Nothing in common there, right.

Lots of other posts about this subject all over the web. Look at google sitemaps forum or try Webmasterworld forum if your a member.

The "problem" has hit thousands of sites and seems to be continuing. Guess all that can be done is to wait and see how Google shakes thing out.

This is typical for new sites. Just keep doing what you are doing... it sounds like you are on the right track.

what's wrong with a RE site linking with a Mortgage site? I think they are related. You need a mortgage to buy a house. Am I missing something?

Summit - if you are talking to me, I did read it. I can't understand why he mentioned the mortgage linking. The others are obvious to me but not this one.

dj - this has also been mentioned on another thread about Matt's comments. Someone made a funny comment about Matt probably not being a homeowner & thus not knowing the connection between real estate & mortgages! LOL!
