Default Fishing again!

Headed down to 10 Thousand Islands on Thursday. Going shark hunting!!! Boy, what do you think of the 1200 + pound Hammerhead caught up near Port Charlotte? What is it that Captain Quint said in the movie Jaws. Something like " I got a taxidermy back home, he going to have a heart attack when he sees what I brung him". Love that silly movie! Love fishing, drinking and bow legged woman more though. At least thats what my wife always says. I just smile and agree!!

We went out off the beach yesterday and caught our limit of Spanish Mackeral, we're gonna grill/smoke them tonight with the rest of the neighborhood. Gonna be doing the shark thing next week, but just the little ones.

"Do you mean this one?"

Hi Jeff,

Yep, that's the one! Some Fish hey? Six hours work, dragged 12 miles and according to the newspaper it ate his trolling motor. Hope he gets the record, cause otherwise all was for naught. We've seen alot of big sharks in Port Charlotte Bay and Boca Grande pass while chasing the tarpon. However, like Brody says in Jaws " were gunna need a bigger boat".

Hey VRI,

Hope you enjoy your catch! We only chase the small ones too. Hooked about a 200 pound bull shark on Thursday. Fought him for an hour or so and cut him loose. Caught some nice 3 to 4 foot Black Tips too. They are so cool. They attack the bait from below (like a Great White) and fly out of the water. I gotta hit the gym though. My right arm still hurts from all the fighting.

Best part of the day though was a 30 pound or so Sea Turtle that played and fed aruond our boat for about an hour. It was really fun to watch. They are things of beauty. And man, are they nimble and fast in the water!

Sounds great, did you keep the black tips? I've caught a couple in the flats but never really went looking for them before. We plan on bringing a couple home for another grill session... any tips?

Unfortunately, my wife who has turned into an "almost" more avid fisherman than me (since moving to Florida, she never fished at all before) doesn't like to keep any fish. The first time we did, she watched me cleaning them and said she felt like we were killing a pet. So no more fresh fish, unless I'm with friends or family who come to vist.

As for Black Tips though, I met a old salt commercial fisherman down in Chokoloskee who told me the following:

The smaller the better: 1 to 2 feet are best.
Hang and thoroughly bleed them, then put immediately into heavily salted and iced fresh water.
Soak whole (without head and tail) in milk for a couple of hours (Yes milk!)
Cut into steaks and soak in milk again for a while longer!
Season and Grill em up!

He grilled some for all the fisherman/campers that night and they were Great!
