How Do I Build Backlinks?

seo linksBacklinks are links that point back to a website, and are essentially the people’s currency of the internet. When people enjoy content or find a site useful, they share the link with other people. Search engines pay attention to this, and use it to evaluate how valuable a site is.

However, not all links are created equal. Like content itself, search engines will pay attention to the quality and relevance of a web page that links to your site. In addition, it only cares about natural links. Realtors who pay or trade links often get caught, and Google will devalue their links as a result.

We’ll get more into Link Building in our upcoming Advanced Guide, because it’s a big, complex topic, but the reigning principle is simple: to build links, you need to have content worth linking to. Keep that principle in mind as you build out your site, and ensure everything you make is the best it could possibly be.

To get you started, here are a few local backlinks you may be able to get:

  • Chamber of Commerce
  • Local Community Directories
  • Search Engine Directories
    • Google MyBusiness, Bing Local, Yahoo Local, Yelp, etc.
  • Local Events & Charities
    • These are typically earned through paid sponsorships

Social Media Backlinks

It’s important to know that social media accounts do not directly impact a website’s SEO. Search engines specifically don’t count “Likes” or comments, because they want to be in control of the data and metrics they use to weigh a site’s value. Consider a scenario where Facebook suddenly removed “Likes” and Google’s algorithm broke as a result; Google will never get itself into a situation where it relies on a third-party.) In that sense, how popular you are on social media simply doesn’t matter to SEO.

However, how people share your content on social media does matter. If people are linking and sharing your content because they like it, those backlinks will build up. For this reason, there is value in sharing your content on social media sites—assuming your followers like what you’re producing and choose to share it themselves.
