Heat map/Behaviour Analytics Tracking

In the spirit of maximising what we already have in terms of a product, do any of you geeks toy around with heatmaps or behaviour analytic tools?

I noticed that only 20% people who click to enter something into the “Buy” search bar end up clicking start search.

Wondering if it would be worth making a smaller header image so people can see the community pages more easily… Any thoughts?

Site is vancouverhomesearch.com if you want to check it out

Interesting thought (and I’m a geek so I’m down with this convo!)

My first question though, what heat map tech are you using to measure?

Ok back to it - before making homepage changes, I would generally want to test this somewhere else (A / B testing).

So what I’d likely do is take one of my high traffic pages (or if using PPC the PPC team could help with this by creating a duplicate homepage) and I would test the various options (with header image, no header image) whatever permutations you’re considering.

Some (many) options / combo’s are available out of the box - but if you wanted to test more refined mods like “half size image height” as you reference above that would require retainer time since you’d be changing the actual CSS layout of the site (which a developer needs to do for you)

Have you done any testing on internal pages for conversion? (hero image vs no hero image?)

PS I’m sure you likely found this aready, but if not

You can create a no hero page with quick search (no custom code)

Just select the basic page layout.

Looks like this on my site

Thanks @Morgan! These are great pointers for A/B testing, especially useful with Google Maps.

I use HotJar with the code added using GTM.

I’m also curious how we can optimize the search bar to get more people to follow through with an initial search, vs bouncing.
